The Legend Behind the Song
Jimmy Buffet’s song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” is very popular, but you may not be aware of the story behind it. Buffet didn’t just write this song while sitting at home, comfortable and inspired. Legend has it, Buffet was out on a sailing trip on his boat, Euphoria. After being on the sea for days, eating only fish and canned goods, Buffet and his crew finally landed at the island Tortola in need of repairs. The crew members were so happy to finally be on land again, and much to their surprise, they found a local restaurant with American cheeseburgers on the menu. They quickly went in and placed their orders, making specific requests to how their burgers were cooked. They were so hungry that even though the burgers were overcooked and on burnt buns, they tasted delicious to Buffet and the sailors. And that is the event that Buffet based “Cheeseburger in Paradise” off of.

Years ago a recipe similar to this was a common one girls used for scout merit badges! You can bake this in your kitchen oven, or in a Dutch oven at a campfire. We add jalapenos or green chilies to the meat. Sometimes we have a dollop of sour cream on top and sprinkle chopped salad onions and bacon bits on it.

I like meals like this because they're casseroles just right for small families. I remember making something similar to this a long time ago when I was learning to cook. My very worn Bisquick cookbook helped me become a more confident cook. We're quite the cheeseburger family so I know we will like this.

Being a cheeseburger aficionado, this recipe is right up my alley. I can't wait to give this one a whirl. I would probably add some bacon and diced green pepper as well, since a cheeseburger without bacon just doesn't feel right. I'm curious to hear how others have personalized this dish.

This pie literally tastes like a cheeseburger! It makes such a great weeknight dinner. Plus, i'd eat these leftovers all week! Next time I may experiment with putting burger toppings in the pie!

Tastes really good when served warm. It's maybe a litte bland and could use more spice, but otherwise it's great!

Yum! Perfect ratio of cheese and beef. This tasted lighter than I was expecting it to, which is great! I could definitely eat a hearty serving of this and not feel weighted down.

Delicious. I love casseroles and hate grilling, so this is a great way to have a cheeseburger without having to make a mess on the grill.

Often there is not a print option. I found a trick I use. Highlight the text you want to print. From your "file" drop down in the upper left corner or your screen select "print". Then when the printer box pops up, click "selection" and then "print". Hopes this helps. Nothing worse than not being able to print the darn recipe.

I add catsup to my meat and onions because we like catsup on burgers. You can also make the meat mixture and layer it with cheese into a store bought or homemade pie crust.
